Well here’s an elegant read on the state of things from journalist Dan Rather.
I’m remembering the evening of and the days immediately following September 11 2001.
Recalling Suheir Hammad’s words days later in First Writing Since giving me something similiar to hope in the anxiety that tentative time threaded through me, and bound me to, others.
I am thinking about all this as a writer and a believer in the power of voice–almost every religious tradition speaks of the power of the Word. The Bible says it came first.
And I think I am saying this: speak, write, voice truth to power.
And also speak, write, voice love and light in what feels dark, haunted, grim.
I have two things for sure in this world–faith and voice and I feel responsible for using them as best I can, whenever I can, to benefit as much as I can. Now more than ever.
Props to Dan Rather and Suheir Hammad, especially, for the gift of reminding me. Because with all this, and you know what I mean by this, I damned sure forgot.
